Indiana Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megans Law requires that each state have a system in place for informing local residents when a sexual offender is located in their neighborhood.
Megan was just seven years old when a previously convicted sexual offender that resided accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and killed her. It was determined that if her family or other residents in the communtiy had been alerted that a previous sexual offender was housed in their community, this assult could've been avoided. With those thoughts, the U.S. Congress legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", also known as Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Since the law has been passed, Indiana has gone out of its way to protect its public by providing the most current information relevant to previous sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The legislation has proven that while sexual assaults are still a danger in the United States, acts committed by past offenders are on a regression.
The information accesible with the enactment of Megan's Law has proven to be a signifcant advantage in keeping one's family guarded from the threat of sexual crimes.
