Indiana Megan's Law

Getting its name from Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law makes it mandatory for every state develop a procedure for notifying local residents when a sexual offender is moves into their area.
Megan was merely seven years old when a previously convicted sexual predator that was living accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and killed her. It was decided that had her family or other residents in the communtiy had been alerted that a previous sexual offender was living in their neighborhood, this assult would've been thwarted. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Since the law was put into effect, Indiana has strived to protect its citizens the most recent information regarding convicted sex offenders and their current residency. The legislation has proven that though sexual assaults are still a occuring in the U.S., offenses committed by prior offenders are on a decline.
