Indiana Megan's Law

Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law makes it mandatory for each state have a system in place for notifying the general public when a sexual offender is located in their community.
Megan was just seven years old when a previously convicted sex offender that was living accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and murdered her. It was determined that if her family or other local residents had been aware that a previous sexual predator was housed in their neighborhood, this heinous act would have been prevented. With those thoughts, the U.S. Congress legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Since the law was passed, Indiana has strived to protect its residents the most recent information relevant to previous sex offenders and their place of residence. The law has shown that though sexual offenses are still a danger in this country, offenses committed by prior offenders are on a downturn.
The information accesible by the enactment of Megan's Law has shown to be a major benefit in keeping one's family safe from the threat of sexual misconduct.
